Tarot School – The Chariot – VII

The ego drives the cart of the body, the senses are the horses and the mind is the bridle. The chariot takes its passenger out of the castle beyond the known world. The charioteer, who can be a man or a woman, wears an apron and belt which are decorated with astrological symbols.

These things will help take care of the charioteer during the journey. The Chariot is pulled by two different coloured sphinxes (usually a black and a white one), as the charioteer wanders through the opposite poles of the maze, while the positive and negative experiences teach him/her to adapt to the environment. The left-hand (the unconscious) holds the reins, which suggests that this sphinx is controlled by mental factors. The human face and animal body of the sphinx represents the symbolism of the evolution of the mind. The light coloured animal is symbolic of joy and happiness, and the dark coloured one is symbolic of sorrow and suffering. The main principle (in both cases) is that we should control our emotions and dominate our desires.

The ring crown on the top of the charioteer’s head is the symbol of self-control and strong will that are essential to victory. The two crescents (half-moons) on the shoulders are symbols of happiness and sorrow and there is a poker in the right-hand (consciousness). Three stars on this crown represent the perfect harmony of the three levels of existence in the universe (body, soul and spirit). The curtain with stars located in the background is the symbol of skyward (heavenly) protection. The rounded symbol at the front of the triumphal chariot represents the duality of heaven and earth, or a man and a woman and their relationship.

The Chariot represents conflict, inner struggle and yet, on the other hand, the possibility of solving problems. If we have inner strength and energy enough to fight, we will achieve our goals. Overcoming these obstacles requires nothing more than ambition and energy. The triumphal chariot card calls us to take the ‘reins’ and take control of our lives. First of all we should recognise what motivates us, what kinds of feelings and desires drive us. We may have gotten involved in some conflict or conflict of interest, but we can solve it and succeed.
